Marine Michael Strank, Franklin, PA, perished Iwo Jima, WWII

Sgt. Michael Strank of Franklin Borough, Cambria County, led the squad of Marines who raised the U.S. flagover Iwo Jima in WWII. This famous image has come to symbolize the United States Marine Corps. Click  to see clip from Strank documentary.

 

John Lipple, Ashville, PA, served on USS Arizona, Pearl Harbor

John Lipple of Ashville Borough, Cambria County, was aboard the USS Arizona when Pearl Harbor was bombed. John was the first of many Cambria County residents who gave their lives in WWII. Click to preview part of Lipple video.

 

Buzz Wagner, WWII Flying Ace

Lt. Colonel Boyd Wagner of Emeigh and Nanty Glo, Cambria County, joined the US Army Air Corps in 1938 and was sent to the South Pacific. When war broke out, he became famous as the first flying Ace of WWII. Click to see Buzz Wagner video.
